I am usually preoccupied with three main "life" projects: I. Linux support and development: Linux is a computer operating system developed as a cooperative venture on the global information networks. It is stable, fast, very full-featured, and usually comes bundled with many hundreds of megabytes of application software. Linux 1.0 was released 14 March 1994; 1.2 was released on March 7, 1995; 2.0 on June 9, 1996. Linux is now functional on the following architectures: i386, i486, i586, DEC Alpha, and 680x0 (x > 2) Amiga, Atari, Sparc and Power PC. For more information on Linux see http://www.linux.org or ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs (see especially ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/faqs/FAQ and ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/INFO-SHEET). II. R. Buckminster Fuller's Design Science Revolution: Bucky Fuller (1895-1983) was an American polymath and "new-former". He invented the Geodesic Dome, Dymaxion car and many other things. I'm especially partial to his "Design Science Revolution" (DSR) and the associated "World Game" concepts. Basically the DSR is a paradigm shift "to make the world work for 100% of humanity in the shortest possible time through spontaneous cooperation without ecological offense or the disadvantage of anyone". The DSR emphasizes developing appropriate tools for solving problems in contradistinction to manipulating people politically, economically, militarily, or psychologically. The DSR is closely associated with "synergetics" which is Fuller's attempt to determine how Nature really operates. Synergetics is the geometrical/scientific underpinning of all Fuller's work. To find out more about Fuller read his two-volume Synergetics: Explorations in the Geometry of Thinking, (C) 1975, 1979 Macmillan Publishing Co. ISBN 0-02-065320-4 and 0-02-092640-5. Synergetics is now available on the web at http://www.servtech.com/public/rwgray/synergetics/synergetics.html . And Critical Path (C) 1981 St. Martin's Press ISBN 0-312-17491-8. I have compiled a 100 page FAQ on Fuller http://www.netaxs.com/~cjf/fuller-faq.html . Unfortunately it is more of a compendium of interesting discussions from 1989 to August 1994 in the Fuller discussion group (as a newsgroup: bit.listserv.geodesic; as e-mail: subscribe by sending a one-line e-mail to listserv@ubvm.bitnet or listserv@ubvm.cc.buffalo.edu: "sub geodesic myrealnamehere"), than a real FAQ. Some day I hope to improve it's usability, but I don't expect this to happen any time soon :( If someone would like to update the FAQ, break it into parts, or otherwise improve it, please contact me (I'd be more than willing to let you build upon or even completely restructure my first attempt). III. Funding the real work: Yes, I need to eat and pay the bills too. This prevents me from having sufficient time to work on the important projects described above. Christopher J.
