It has info on content and purpose of the list, as well as subscription info, posting instructions, etc. It should prove useful to new subscribers, as well as those who are unfamiliar with LISTSERV operations. This message is being posted on Wed Sep 1 00:00:03 PDT 1999. If you are tired of receiving this message twice per month, and are reading bit.listserv.geodesic through USENET news, then you can enter this subject into your KILL/SCORE file. If you're reading through email, you can set up a filter to delete the message. Both of these tricks are WELL worth learning how to do, if you don't know already. And isn't it about time to learn something new? Isn't it always? :-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GEODESIC is a forum for the discussion of the ideas and creations relating to the work of R. Buckminster (Bucky) Fuller. Topics range from geodesic math to world hunger; floating cities to autonoumous housing, and little bit of everything in between. On topic discussion and questions are welcome. SPAM and unsolicited promotions are not. (Simple, eh?) ----------------------- To subscribe, send mail to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.ACSU.BUFFALO.EDU and in the body of your letter put the line: SUB GEODESIC When you want to post, send mail to GEODESIC@LISTSERV.ACSU.BUFFALO.EDU ******NOT***** to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.ACSU.BUFFALO.EDU! LISTSERV@LISTSERV.ACSU.BUFFALO.EDU is for subscriptions, administrivia, archive requests, etc. GEODESIC@LISTSERV.ACSU.BUFFALO.EDU is the actual discussion group. Anything sent to GEODESIC will go to all members. (And you don't want to look like a jerk having everyone see your "SUB GEODESIC John Q. Public" command! ;^) ) This list is also linked to USENET in the group bit.listserv.geodesic If you want to receive copies of everything you send to the list, use the command SET GEODESIC REPRO. If you DON'T want copies, use SET GEODESIC NOREPRO. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TO SIGN OFF THE LIST: Simply send a message to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.ACSU.BUFFALO.EDU and in the body of your letter put the line: SIGNOFF GEODESIC You should receive a confirmation note in the mail when you have been successfully removed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LIST ARCHIVES: - Reference.COM has begun archiving this list as of: Jan. 4, 1997 - Searchable archives for the lists are available at: http://www.reference.com/cgi-bin/pn/listarch?list=GEODESIC@listserv.acsu.buffalo.edu And of course, Listserv itself is keeping archives of the list, dating back to June, 1992. Send a note to listserv@listserv.acsu.buffalo.edu with this message in the BODY of the note: INDEX GEODESIC You can get help on other Listserv commands by putting the line HELP into the body of the note. (Can be in the same message.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (You may want to save this file to forward on to people who are interested, as it tells what the list is about, and how to subscribe and unsubscribe.) Comments: To: bward@metro.net MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Universe is pre Newtonian for now, Thank you for answering this is a good answer. I would like to talk more about it but my rent was just raised in this marina for my boat and I am moving to another in San Pedro CA, from Marina Del Rey. They increased my rent over half in one month. Bucky stated all conscientiously apprehended and communicated experience. What I wish to do, is define a new vision for the future. Based on precessional effects within the volume, always being another set of volumes in motion. God is what most use. The term unititivity is to allow a new word that has no sub cultural significance and therefore no bias as for gods of many that is on earth. a space age thought that allows all religions and sciences to begin a new, a volume that is not a greek god as is universe where it comes from. The concept that all light that makes all volumes and us, are precessing in this volume of known radii to us to this moment. This is different than the old universe idea. That synergetic geometry is within this volume interaction with us. That all people and all thoughts of this volume can say we have in the past not agreed with your ideas of the volume but just for fun we will talk unitivity and stop the religious wars, over the volume dancing. I have to paint my boat in the morning, latter, thanks for the talk :-) Bruce Ward wrote: > Michael S. The extreme slenderness ratio (over 60, cf Synergetics 2, 792.34) made it doubtful whether the struts would be strong enough to support their own weight in this tensegrity configuration. I thought I had all the 14 gauge steel wire tendons the right length before I put their loop ends around the struts. But at first the tensegrity had the symptoms of too little surface tension. I wanted it to stand on the ends of 3 struts, with the other 21 strut ends suspended in the air. That's always been easy to achieve with smaller tensegrities I've built, but those were approximately weightless. This one has struts that weigh about 20 pounds each, and 6 strut ends were hitting the ground. It was like a 16' diameter basketball that was underinflated, with a flat spot on the bottom that was too big, enclosing 6 strut ends instead of only 3. As I tightened tendons some of the struts started to bow. I wondered if the struts were too limber for their weight -- in which case I would never be able to pull the wires tight enough to completely suspend 21 strut ends. Instead, struts would bend (or break) and more than 3 strut ends would hit the ground when I stood it on a triangle. I never did find out how to calculate the compressive force on a strut in this design as a function of its weight. I don't even know if anyone can calculate the stresses in a simple 3 strut tensegrity prism! The tensegrity theory I've come across is entirely limited to ideal weightless components, where geometry is the only thing that matters. But thru persistent adjustments I did get the tensegrity to stand up on 3 legs! Now it jiggles like a tensegrity should. Pushing a strut end about 6" starts a jiggle that decays to about 1/2" in one minute, with a period of about 1 second. If you look closely enough, it moves in a breeze. So, the limit to slenderness has not yet been reached! Some of the struts DO bow noticeably. The center of the worst one is about 12" away from a straight line drawn between its ends. That effectively shortens the strut to 12'9" instead of 13', about a 2% error. The adjustment trick that finally worked was to shorten tendons until the ends of the struts were separated by the distances that would be geometrically correct for 13' struts, ignoring the bowing. I probably got those distances accurate to within about 2% too. There are significant asymmetries in this tensegrity, starting with the differences in weights among the struts. Also each strut is heavier at one end than the other. The average of the thick end diameters is 70 mm, and the average of the thin ends is 52 mm, with extremes at 78 mm and 43 mm. I had to double 3 struts by tying a second small tree trunk to them when they bowed too much. They were not perfectly straight to begin with, but they had been successful as trunks holding up 40' trees. The good news for slender columns in this tensegrity configuration is, I think, that as a strut bows, it sheds load to the stiffer struts. The thicker struts remain straight, even tho the slenderness ratio of the thickest strut is over 59! ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 20 Sep 1999 16:29:04 -0700 Reply-To: List for the discussion of Buckminster Fuller's works Sender: List for the discussion of Buckminster Fuller's works From: "P. The charity, Christian Aid, has campaigned for a decade for the cancellation of the Third World's unpayable debts. In a report - Who owes who?: Climate change, debt, equity and survival - it says rich countries' debt to the world for the environmental damage they cause is immense. It says they are overwhelmingly responsible for global warming, with per capita carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions 62 times higher than those of the least developed countries. And the report says that, dollar for dollar, the poorest countries are about twice as efficient as the industrialised ones in their commercial use of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) to generate national income. The report, Equity and the Environment, published by Friends of the Earth (FoE) and the left-of-centre think tank Catalyst, carries an introduction by the Environment Minister, Michael Meacher. He says the report shows that environmental problems affect most heavily "the most vulnerable members of society: the old, the very young and the poor". "There has been far too little research in this country into the social effects of environmental degradation," he says. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Linkname: FMF Feminist News - September 23, 1999 URL: http://www.feminist.org/news/newsbyte/newsnow.html Women in Eastern Europe Face Poverty, Abuse, Barriers to Reproductive Health Wednesday, Unicef reported on conditions for women in Eastern Europe, after an extensive study of 27 countries in the former Soviet Union. While acknowledging that communist policies did not ensure equality between women and men, Unicef concluded that current conditions for women are worse than those under Soviet rule. Economic decline and the collapse of state-supported social services are contributing to an increase in unemployment and poverty for women. Over the last decade, 56% of jobs lost in Eastern Europe were jobs held by women, and women continue to be concentrated in low-paid, part-time positions. Sexually transmitted diseases are rampant, with one of every 100 girls infected with syphilis in Russia and three other countries. Increasing trafficking in women, coupled with a lack of access to contraceptives and reproductive health options, exacerbates the situation. In addition, womens representation in legislative bodies has shrunk by about a third in many of the countries investigated. A hopeful note is a noticeable rise in the number of women entrepreneurs and grass-roots organizations dedicated to the elimination of domestic violence. The rendering is being done in large-scale to be reduced and mounted as a new main introductory page for Tetworld. It is a very difficult task for the artist--so works progresses slowly, but steadily. I think the Tetworld design will have some advantages over the original concept/layout... We are using the Temcor dome (cited above) as a model for housing the HQS. There is a grand upper tier, which wraps around the interior of the dome. "Below" the tier, and in the center of the dome, is a central map "station"--with different dymaxion maps displayed at each of the 4 compass points (i.e., N,E,W,S). The two map configurations shown in the rendering will be at the west and south compass points. Each of the 4 maps is tilted at about 35 degrees, allowing for ease of viewing from the tier, and at each of the 4 compass points. The west map is of the "traditional" one ocean, one land mass, configuration. The southern map is reconfigured, and is Antarctica-centric--the same configuration that Ocean Wave Energy Company uses to display global wave action "currents"--that map can be seen at: http://www.owec.com/owecmap.htm At each of the 4 compass points on the tier, and at the front edge of the tier, and facing each of the 4 maps, are single row banks of individual computer work stations with monitors. Directly below (underneath) the circular tier, are a series of conference/meeting rooms. The dome is windowless, i.e., dark--with needed light available at required locations. The feel will be similar to that of a planetarium--or observatory--with the night sky projected on the dome ceiling. Conceptually, it feels like the Spaceship Earth control room. To date, the dome, the tier, the conference rooms, the work stations, are sketched and detailed as line drawings--the western and southern maps are drawn, and the coloring of the 2 maps is almost finished. I think it will be exciting... -- Regards, Mark Siegmund email: siegmund@thegrid.net Tetworld Peace Through Development Project & Game Introductory Page: http://members.tripod.com/~Tetworld/world1.html Main page: http://members.tripod.com/~Tetworld/+index.html The Tetworld Story: http://members.tripod.com/~Tetworld/index.htm Award winning ezine"21st" (Tetrahedron and the Game article) http://www.vxm.com/link.siegmund.html To subscribe to Buckminster Fuller discussion list about global game concept and proposal, or to join the Tetworld Game list or the Belize Development list, go to: http://members.tripod.com/~Tetworld/+index.html and select the desired option. ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 26 Sep 1999 11:37:36 EDT Reply-To: List for the discussion of Buckminster Fuller's works Sender: List for the discussion of Buckminster Fuller's works From: RSmith7957@AOL.COM Subject: Re: The Game Room? The game room is in your finger tips. We have made it past the old room style think tank model to the information station on space ship earth, one unified room in the universe model. No need to spend money on a room, you can use foot ball fields while having music between information station breaks. As far as I am concerned Kirby you can come over here now, it is all over with now that the FBI has designed in the right pace the right design for all of us that are more patient and not so hot headed an ego maniac as you have been about the family. I forgive you for kicking me off your site with your mighty handed tactics of power over flower attitude. Calm down and be an average person for a change please. Like I need to spam your site, what a laugh! Like my spaming to offer to help some one fund a project was a big deal. You spamed this site with you syn-list agenda every day when I came on line last year `10 months ago. I did not even know what sparring is, for you to make up a lie that I am a bad guy that spams is like calling a drip of water an ocean. Some times you will do anything to make yourself look good. I like your thoughts and ideas very much most the time it is the presents of I am arrogant enough to be prince of darkness and get away with it that gets me. Other wise I think the fuller field of thought around here is pretty good. was your father an alki. Or was it riding the horse and buggy to town that got you so self oriented. You still have not told us what you call the one volume we live in together? You can read it to us, Kant' you. Peter of Geni, I am sorry I picked on you so hard, Geni has allow the dark ages some light and I am acting like Kirby to state you are a world game rip off, You have allowed a lot of people some great events to share and at least it happens. SO PETE I AM SORRY I was wrong and mad at Kirby and made a move into a space that was relative to seeing some one that takes BFI and World Game money and states this is a place that is a better bang for your buck, do not give your money to FBI and WOrld Game, give it to me. The truth is you did a great thing for the 100 year birthday and it would not have happened with out you so keep up the great rip off it is better than nothing. Mickey. I am on the move cruising around on my boat, I think I will go north to Alaska or SOuth to San Pedro now. I have bought my wind mill and 4 solar cells and now can live at sea anywhere free of rent and bills, of energy, clear of all those little development tactics to make you pay some how with crowds of people and traffic. I row in and row out, no more rent hikes. Wow what a new way to live. I am going to sea in three days and will be off the wed for a while, sea yA! Bill Perk congratulations on the dome I hope to see the park as you have stated in Carbondale by the end of 2000. I did what bucky and anne would have wanted I think and I sold it with a lot of propitiousness with the price I gave to Bill in hopes that the park can be made by Bucky and Anne's Anniversary and Bucky's birthday next year. Or at least made into a historical site. Back on line in a week after going to sea for anyone that cares. MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit It is much better for actual personal worship sites for the world game to do them at foot ball stadiums and have a map the size of a football field that you can project from a blimp information that is centered with cables over the stadium. this is the way bucky, Medard and I were talking about it last we were together at his 87 birthday party in D.C. You just take it around like a circus other wise the net is the place to make history. The personal experience of having 50,000 people playing at a foot ball stadium and when walking on the map this big your house will be seen for real. The scale is very large at ground level. I have proposed this for Harmony for Humanity concerts to have at major foot ball fields all over the world on the 2000 orbit day. No one seems to think it is soon enough for it so it is not happening.
