Below is an email I received from Wen Wenger stating that Buckminster Fuller was on the board of Advisers of his organization which is now know as Project Renaissance. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: Buckminster Fuller Info Date: Fri, 01 Oct 1999 11:11:48 -0400 From: "Win Wenger, Ph.D." To: mail@SpaceshipEarth.com This enterprise started in 1969 in a conference I conducted at a small college I was teaching in at the time. It was a conference on the question of whether human intelligence could be increased, and at that time a lot of our interest centered on early reading, on various neurodevelopmental issues, and better methods of teaching and learning. At that conference we resolved and organized to attempt to start a college which would reflect all of this and which would operate within the context of Mensa. We incorporated in January, 1970 as MCM, Inc., a name we kept until 1996. When Bucky heard about it he was delighted to join our Board of Advisors, and agreed to make approaches to Marshall McLuhan to do likewise, but then McLuhan died, and so did the college without Mensa support. I retained the charter as a legal basis for some of the research and teaching I was starting to do. In the interval before I'd built up much again, of course, Fuller died. In March, 1977, I pulled together some friends in a friend's apartment in Arlington, VA to experiment and see if we could come anywhere near replicating some rather sensationally reported accelerated learing effects I had been reading about. We tried a number of things and to my surprise they all worked, way beyond my wildest hopes. Two weeks later, further experiments, same breakthrough-level results. I defined this part of the MCM education and research non-profit firm as a branch called Project Renaissance and finally, in 1996, we changed the name of the whole endeavor to that. One of the reasons for the name was/is our perhaps self-conscious efforts to trigger a new cultural and scientific renaissance and perhaps renascence. Another was that some years ago, and without reference to Mensa, we decided that at some point we were going to resume our efforts to create a new institution of higher learning, which will justifiably bear the name Renaissance University. We are looking for partners in this endeavor. Full partners, more than just our vision involved. If its creation depends upon just our efforts alone, our projected start-up date is 2005. With strong partners we could move that up by several years. --win, discovering the obvious at http://www.winwenger.com At 06:20 PM 8/21/99 -0600, mail@SpaceshipEarth.com wrote: >Dear Dr. Wenger: > >A couple of people have asked for further information on your >association with Buckminster Fuller. Now connect the centers of the octahedrons and the >room is filled with floating octahedrons. Apples and oranges? Dual fruits of the same IVM tree I'd say. These cubes terminate in the tetrahedral holes of an IVM (holes surrounded by 4 IVM spheres) whereas your octahedra terminate in the octahedral holes (surrounded by 6 IVM spheres). The cubes have a volume of 3, the octahedra 4, relative to a cuboctahedron of volume 20 (defined by 12 spheres around a nuclear sphere). Your cubes are described by two inter- penetrating tetrahedra, each of volume 1. The cube and octahedron are duals, meaning the vertices and faces change places (as to their number), leaving the total number of edges the same (12). Together, in combination, these two define the rhombic dodecahedron of volume 6, with vertices in all the 8+6=14 holes surrounding any IVM sphere. See: http://www.teleport.com/~pdx4d/intro.html These rhombic dodecahedra fill space. The inscribed unit radius spheres are tangent at each of the 12 rhombs and "kiss" (touch one another) through these 12 K-points (this is terminology I don't think Bucky invented -- not considered quirky or idiosyncratic). Note that the cuboctahedron and rhombic dodecahedron are also duals, although their edges don't cross in the concentric hierarchy, since the latter is "shrink wrapped" around an IVM sphere. The concept of "dual" doesn't include any notion of relative size -- so they're still duals. If you consider a rhomb (face of the rhombic dodeca) and the two sphere centers on either side of it (connected by a rod of length 2, through the K-point), you have the 6 points of an irregular octahedron (rhomb contributes 4 points, spheres centers 2). This shape is what Bucky calls the Coupler and has a volume of 1 (same as IVM tetrahedron). The Coupler is a space-filler. If you slice the Coupler in half (exposing the rhomb), and slice each half into quarters (cross cross through the rhomb, long and short diagonals = cuts), you get MITEs (MInimum TEtrahedra) of volume 1/8 -- another space filler. Each MITE breaks down into 2As and a B module. Volume A = Volume B = 1/24. See: http://www.teleport.com/~pdx4d/modules.html Here's a volume table of the shapes so far described: Shape Volume ----------------------- A module 1/24 B module 1/24 *MITE 1/8 *Coupler 1 | Tetrahedron 1 / Cube 3 \ Octahedron 4 /*Rh Dodeca 6 \ Cuboctahedron 20 * = space-filler / = dual pair | = self-dual \ An alternative way to make Couplers is to take a volume 3 cube and draw edges from a square face to the body center. Two face-bonded cubes define a Coupler between them. Cube volume = 3, and 3/6 = 1/2 (1/6th cube). So again, the Coupler comes out with volume 1. The above toon (scenario) shows that space-filling rhombic dodecahedra and space-filling cubes both define the same set of space-filling couplers. What we're doing in the cube case is using both sets of tetrahedral holes to define a simple cubic lattice (= XYZ lattice). The cube face diagonals are length 2. By activating the octahedral holes, you fill half your space-filling cube centers. These, plus the IVM spheres already activated (centers of rhombic dodecahedra) define a body-centered cubic lattice (bcc) i.e. a simple cubic lattice with centers of cubes also included. This is equivalent to 4 IVMs. See: http://www.inetarena.com/~pd4d/ocn/xtals101.html In XYZ, a cube of face diagonal 2 would have edges of root(2) and a volume of root(2)^3 (root(2) to the third power). But in synergetics the volume of this same cube is 3. This is because synergetics looks at the tetrahedron as a model of 3rd powering i.e. a growing/shrinking tetrahedron has a volume that varies as a 3rd power of edge length change. So 1x1x1 is a modeled by a regular tetrahedron, in contrast to the traditional/conventional regular cube. So if you want to compute a volume using XYZ methods and then convert to the corresponding synergetics volume, you can use the third power of the Synergetics Constant. This takes a cube of root(2)^3 to 3 i.e. root(2)^3 * S3 = 3, so S3 = 3/root(2)^3 = root(9/8) = about 1.06066. All of the above is with regard to the 4-fold symmetries of the IVM lattice. To move to 5-fold, we use the jitterbug transformation as a conceptual bridge, going from a cuboctahedron of any frequency (sphere-to -sphere intervals along an edge or radial = frequency) to an icosahedron of the same frequency and same outer shell sphere count (10 ff + 2). The icosa's dual is the pentagonal dodeca, and the two combine to form a rhombic triacontahedron, which Bucky shrink-wraps around the unit radius sphere, just as he does his rhombic dodecahedron. The shrink-wrapped rhombic triacontahedron has a volume just a hair over 5. If you decrease it's radius from 1 (= radius of enclosed IVM sphere) to about 0.9998, you get a rhombic triacontahedron of precisely 5. By criss-crossing it's surface rhombs (as we did for the Coupler), we get tetrahedral modules, 4 per rhomb i.e. 30 x 4 = 120. If this is the volume 5 rhombic triacontahedron, the modules are called Ts, and have volume 1/24, same as As and Bs. If this is a volume 5+ rhombic triacontahedron, the modules are called Es. See: http://www.teleport.com/~pdx4d/tmod.html Here's an enchanced volumes table: Shape Volume ----------------------- A module 1/24 B module 1/24 T module 1/24 E module >1/24 (> = more than) *MITE 1/8 *Coupler 1 Tetrahedron 1 Cube 3 Octahedron 4 Rh Triaconta 5 (120 T mods) Rh Triaconta >5 (120 E mods) Rh Dodeca 6 Pent Dodeca ~15.35 Icosahedron ~18.50 Cuboctahedron 20 See: http://www.teleport.com/~pdx4d/volumes.html Note that approximately none of this information is currently shared with elementary or high school students in North America as of 1999, even though all of it has been available for at least 20 years or more. This includes inner struts, outer struts, web struts, and the hubs to connect them all together. This information is in 'The Artifacts of R Buckminster Fuller, Volume 4', pages 95-138, specifically page 123. This total does not include the Plexiglas covering or the sunshade system, or any other miscellaneous components. See also the book 'Geodesics' by Popko, figures 87-93. He wanted to use the earth itself as the conductive medium by which a high-frequency electrical wave could be transmitted to points around the world, relying on the geometry of the earth. Supposedly, all that would be needed to extract the energy would be a simple grounded apparatus. My question is: Has this been discussed as a method for implementing Bucky's global energy grid? (Suggest you search for their web site.) Tesla was a prolific writer -- and his books are filled with breakthroughs in the electrical field. Edison and Tesla were the genius behind the Alternating and Direct Current systems that now interconnect the developed world. There have been a few tests of microwave and (laser transmission of power at the energy labs). These have mostly been in remote locations serving small loads. Their are many Tesla advocates who have contacted GENI about the wireless concept. Yet no other scientist, laboratory or utility has developed a prototype at this time (that I am aware of.) The GENI Initiative focuses on the interconnection of international and inter-continental electric networks, with an emphasis on optimizing the abundant renewable energy resources in the region. High voltage AC and DC systems are proven today -- providing the infrastructure the enables everything else. Tesla's proposal for a wireless system would be the epitomy of ephemeralization in the energy sector. It is worthy scientific investigation, but for now we need to provide basic electricity for 2 billion people (1/3 of humanity) who are presently unserved. And just as daunting, in twenty-five years, another 2 billion new people will be born -- 90% in developing nations. We need to do everything we can today, with today's technology. And when new technologies are developed, existing metals and resources can be recycled for use in the new artifact. I understand your reasoning. But of course there's a flip side to it, which is as the rest of the world develops better living standards, there will be less that the USA has which the rest of the world has not. Improving living standards south of the border is another way to reduce the pressure along the Fence. I think we at least agree that "ideally" the USA is open to the world's struggling, as carved on the Statue of Liberty, and in this sense the Fence is a tool of propagandists who want to point out the hypocrisy built into the so-called American Way. I have no problem with the fact that people challenge the USA to live up to its own stated ideals. I consider this healthy, encourage it. >As for kicking any American ass, it would probably be best for you not to >start with Texas. We really frown on that here. I don't recall discussing that anatomical feature of your body (I'm not the one who made up the subject line for this topic). My point was that the global financial system gives all kinds of incentives to corporations to flit about the globe, as disembodied spirits (legislatively contrived "fictive persons" with human rights and giant-like abilities to own and control assets), whereas the real, live human beings have to contend with all these electrified and razor-wired barriers, these bureaucracies which thrive on extorting high tolls from whomever wishes to cross one of these political boundaries (again, corporations have ways to get around these controls which the average citizen does not -- e.g by means of transfer pricing, intra- subsidiary, which lowers the taxable book value of an item). I consider freedom of movement to be somewhat intrinsic to the American value system. USAers are always decrying alien systems which restrict the free movement of citizens internally. And yet the USA conspires with other countries to enforce such a regime at the global level. I consider this hypocritical. At least the rhetoric should point in the direction of "freedom of movement for all", even if balanced by discussions of "what's practical" or "how to design for this day so it works for all of us" etc. (cite CBS News of yesterday evening, re concerns about "unsafe trucks" crossing from Canada and Mexico into the lower 48). As discussed above, my interest is in lessening the living standard differential across political barriers so that the "voltage pressure" on populations to get away from horrible living conditions is decreased. I see GENI as an organization which works to bring about this lowering of voltage pressure (www.geni.org). Right now, we have a global system which encourages big money to exploit the vulnerability of penned in human populations, to make big profits off the fact that these differentials exist. A question for general systems theorists is whether we can design a "global university" in which students and faculty (i.e. you and I) have more equitable access to assets, such that politically enforced barriers like the Wall and the Fence become relics of a very dark age (the age we're living in today). He came up with 2 distribution schemes -- one used the ionosphere, and high frequency high current transmission. The other, which I believe you are talking about, was a VLF system, around 14.7Hz if memory serves. He injected a gigantic pulse of energy into the ground (at Colorado Springs) and used the earth as a schumann resonator. Basically he bounced the energy off the other side of the earth, and set up a standing wave through the earth's core. This had the effect of turning the earth from an electrical sink to an electrical source -- really quite brilliant. It also allowed him to set the world's record for man-made lightning. With our current scheme of using earth ground, most of our modern electronics would be fried -- they would need to be redesigned. Really a relatively minor change, but...it would have to be implemented on a massive scale. > My question is: Has this been discussed as a method > for implementing Bucky's global energy grid? Check out http://www.keelynet.com which is the web implementation of the KeelyNet BBS. It's run by Jerry Decker, an acquaintance of mine who lives rather close to my home...he lives in one of Dallas' suburbs. Anyway, he has quite a few files relating to Tesla and Keely. A mirror of his files also appears on http://www.eskimo.com/~billb which is run by a friend of his, Bill Beatty. -- Chuck Knight ========================================================================= Date: Mon, 25 Oct 1999 12:15:50 -0700 Reply-To: List for the discussion of Buckminster Fuller's works Sender: List for the discussion of Buckminster Fuller's works From: Joe S Moore Subject: Re: Bucky quote Comments: To: Mark Siegmund MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Mark, I have been able to find the following references: The original proposal on pages 55-60 of _The Artifacts of R Buckminster Fuller, Volume 4_. We must grasp the fact that curbing human-induced greenhouse gases will not halt climate change. That is the biggest myth of them all. My advice is therefore to ignore the hype. It will only make you unnecessarily anxious. Let them play with their inadequate climate models and come up with scenarios, the worse the better. Instead, remember that humans have survived climate change for thousands of years, not by playing God with one or two politically selected factors, but by adapting to the new conditions, whether hot, cold, dry or wet.
