UNIX SIG By Christopher J. Fearnley The Unix SIG will meet from 11-1 as usual. But I'd appreciate it if someone could contribute to the Data Bus. I getting too busy to write articles each month. PLUG (Philadelphia Area Linux User's Group) a spin-off from PACS' Unix SIG meets every other week now. Send e-mail to cjf@netaxs.com to be added to the announcements mailing list. Linus Torvalds announced a code freeze on the 1.3.xx series of kernels. This is the first step in the process of stabilizing the kernel after a rash of new features have been added (including SMP support, some real time extensions, portability to the DEC Alpha, MIPS and Sparc architectures, an numerous other features). The next version of the Linux kernel will be 2.0 and will be finalized as soon as all the bugs are ironed out (my guess is six months or so). FYI, I'll be attending the first conference on Freely Redistributable Software in Cambridge in early February. Remind me to tell you how it went.
