The concentric hierarchy is looking more like a "fly through" topic area, a non-stopping pass through node in a network or hypertoon of interconnected scenarios. In the USA, we have this bias in favor of "civilian control of the military", but this has apparently gone out the window in Europe, where the very organization that drops the bombs is also free to impose sanctions and promise them lifted if the election in Serbia goes the way it wants. Regardless of which side you're voting for, it's disturbing to have this military regime making the kinds of statements you'd expect from sovereign nation diplomats. I consider it hypocritical of those who fear the United Nations as having pretensions to world government status, not expressing similar anxieties about the UN's chief competitor, a military alliance which has empowered itself to speak out regarding impending elections, while imposing sanctions and controlling bombers at the same time. Looks to me like the principle of "civilian control of the military" is now dead in Europe, with the USA hardly raising a peep of protest. Probably that's because Albright has always been starry-eyed for those UKers, who wee NATO as a latter-day vehicle for age-old imperial tendencies (with the USA as the dumb-ox big bro in need of Oxbridge-style tutelege in this regard). No doubt Hutchings will chime in with some tiresome LaRouchie mumbo jumbo at this juncture. Plus, as the US energy czar well knows, it'd be convenient to pipe oil through a patchwork of well-heeled states, as a way of circumventing some less tractable territories. Livingry design science can help alleviate this situation by giving everyone the opportunity to contribute in some creative capacity to the overall success of humanity. By teaching (and better yet by demonstrating) that each individual has a mind capable of comprehending some of the governing principles of universe and that with a little honest exploration they too can come up with solutions to some as-yet unaddressed problem. Pharmaceutical companies would be able to produce mind-altering recreational drugs so cheaply that even heroin addicts could supply their daily fix from food stamp money. There would also be an incentive to produce safer synthetic substitutes for natural drugs like heroin or cocaine. Overall, the system we have now is probably the worst possible combination of moral condemnation and economic mismanagement. Ultimately it boils down to the individual's spiritual choice, as Fuller experienced by the lake, to accept a life of universe service or reject it in favor of personal oblivion. Hi Kirby, I recently heard an interview on Charlie Rose where a Russian businessman concerned with his country's slide back into totalitarianism under Putin expressed the opinion that NATO should lay out a plan for Russia's eventual membership because if they are made to feel rejected, they will turn to form an anti-NATO alliance with all the other "outsider" nations who have an axe to grind with the West. This sounds reasonable to me. Perhaps LAWCAP wants this separation to occur in order to promote their very profitable war business? It's strange to hear NATO espousing democratic principles, when its top people are not elected, nor part of a body designed to really serve as a representational government. How much more transparent is NATO than the WTO, I can hear people asking. However, I'm not willing to surrender my USA to NATO command and control either. Individuals will always be willing take risks to find "the gold" (substitute whatever of value -- an Olympic medal for example) -- that's alchemy, after all. If you have a highly disciplined mind, you might get somewhere new with the assistance of something like LSD. But your results need to be recognizably valuable and communicable to others who aren't tripping, and to yourself when not using LSD. If the value is only realizable when doing the drug, then it's not nearly so valuable or worthwhile -- you've self-indulgently fried your brain but left nothing much for others to appreciate (what I call "wasted"). Anyway, I don't discount the fact that mind-altering drugs of various kinds have contributed positively, as well negatively, to the human scenario. The cultures which seem to get the most mileage from drugs have set up disciplined practices around their use, take it seriously, have elders/veterans involved to give wise counsel. The risks are taken seriously. Sometimes you lose a kid. Just handing out black lights and lava lamps while giving mall rats easy access to LSD through vending machines isn't going to do much for humans in Universe I don't think. We'd probably just get a lot of bad music, along with more accidents on the interstate. We'd lose a lot of kids and get no breakthroughs in physics or any other science, is my expectation. My drug-addiction-rescue scenario is based on giving people hope, providing life-support, and offering educational and service/work opportunities. My premise is that self-destructive drug-use comes from a sense of worthlessness about ones existence. By giving people the chance to contribute in some significant way to the overall success of humanity, their lives takes on a new meaning and vitality which alleviates the need/desire for drugs. (Of course counseling and medical treatment will be available to anyone who wants it.) Not everyone will choose to take advantage of these opportunities. Some people prefer the death of self destruction over the life of universal service. In a free society, these two camps will become clearly differentiated: (a) the humanity-serving creators of life sustaining wealth and advancing civilization, and (b) self-serving parasites breeding death & destruction. Every child will learn to tell the difference, either from instruction or by hard experience. We all have to make up our own minds about what our existence will represent. We make these choices daily based on our deepest desires and the bonds of love we have formed with others. I suppose my own bias is somewhat "libertarian" in the sense that I don't think one set of standards for millions of people makes much sense. You have to zoom in on the local culture and see what's going on. Could be that some native Americans do indeed handle peyote quite responsibly, but by the same token so might other enclaves have OK ways of dealing with this or other substances. In general, I'm skeptical of attempts to legislate "morality" for vast geographical areas populated by different ethnicities, each with its own way of approaching these matters. In short, I'm reluctant to enter any debate over "how it should be" for entire nations (especially big ones) -- I'm not persuaded that's a logical approach. That being said, there are practical matters to consider, and if some locales don't want some substances to get in easily, then we should respect those standards. It's not an easy issue, obviously. Getting back to the theme of World Game, I think global data displays which show clearly where a lot of the drugs are produced, where consumed, what the distribution patterns are, would be pretty useful to all participants. The focus of design science should be on feeding all sides in these debates with access to plentiful, comprehensible, relevant data. I think it would prove very illuminating to show the historical correlation between drug centers and the arms trade. We're not dealing with particularly new situations. What's changed over the years is the lethality of the weaponry and the effectiveness of global transportation and communications systems. The desire and market for psychoactives is nothing new (I think a lot of what the history books talk about as "spice trade" is either euphemistic or deliberately ignores the issue). Much more should be done to revisit the Opium Wars, for example. I don't think most Chinese are comfortable with how little airplay that chapter gets in western popular culture (including in K-12), outside of specialized academic circles. Ignorance is what we need to combat. Let's up the information quantity and quality, learn a lot of stuff we don't even know we don't know, and then come back to the table with fresh ideas about what to do re substance control (a bigger issue than just drugs). As a domes size increases, the frequency generally will need to be increased. As the frequency increases, the angle of incidence between adjacent strut increases to where it is almost flat (i.e. 180 degrees). This condition is very good for the resistance of internal (outward) forces but provides very little resistance to external (inward) forces. Resistance for very large domes of very high frequency, tends to be akin to the dimpling you see in a balloon when you poke your finger into it. I don't remember reading where Bucky said that the strength increases with frequency. Distributed loads are no problem. Domes distribute these loads beautifully, through all of the members...hardly any stress on any individual part of the dome. It's this reason that diving bells (external pressure) and pressure vessels (internal pressure) are spherical, too. Now, with regard to point loads... I live in Texas...it's not unheard of for tornados to thrust straws through telephone poles or tree trunks, and trees through roofs. It's an extreme example, but not all that uncommon. Down the street from me there is a "lot with a pool" where a house used to stand...the 300 year old tree that was lifted over the house, and then dropped, fell through their roof and destroyed the entire house. Point loads are going to happen. It's a "worst case" scenario, but they *will* happen.
